Understanding Reports

This chapter explains how to integrate Report Manager with the supported third-party report services: Crystal Reports, Microsoft SQL Report Server, and Oracle Reports. Report Manager is the portlet in Civic Platform where agency users schedule and run the reports developed with the third-party reporting services, and with Accela Report Writer.

There are three required steps for setting up this feature, followed by two optional steps. These steps are outlined at a high level below, and described in detail in the sections that follow.

  1. The first step is Installing the Third Party Reporting Services.

Installation instructions are provided for each of the supported third-party report services: Crystal Reports, Microsoft SQL Report Server, and Oracle Reports.

  2. The second step is Setting Up the Reports Directory

In this step you create a reports directory on the report server machine for storing the reports that users access from Report Manager.

  3. Step three involves Adding Report Security Parameters.

To protect your agency’s data, you must add a specific security parameter to the reports that users run against the Civic Platform database.

  4. Step four is optional and involves Configuring IE for Client-side Executable Reports.

If you plan to execute reports from programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel, you must set an Internet Explorer security property, as described in this section.

  5. Step five is optional and involves Setting Up Crystal Reports Database Login Information.

If you are using Crystal Reports, you must set the login credentials for each report service your agency uses.
